How Is Spending So Much Time Online Affecting My Relationship?

The internet is a wonderful tool and spending time online can be very productive for many people when it is used responsibly. When going online makes you feel more comfortable than being with your real-life friends or your partner, or you would rather spend time checking your mobile device than interacting with people face to face, you may have crossed the line into internet addiction. At this point, you are no longer controlling how much time you are spending online; your compulsion to be on the internet is controlling you.

Internet AddictionSigns and Symptoms of Internet Addiction

  • You lose track of the amount of time you are spending online.
  • You are neglecting spending time with your spouse or partner, family and friends because of your online activities.
  • You are being dishonest about the amount of time you are spending online.
  • You find that you would rather spend time with your online “friends” and relationships than your real-life ones.
  • Finishing tasks at home has become an issue due to your internet activities.
  • You have or are experiencing physical symptoms like headaches, backaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome due to your online activities.
  • Going online has become an outlet for when you feel sad, stressed, guilty or excited.
  • You go without sleep so that you can spend more time online.
  • You have tried to put a limit on your online activities but have been unsuccessful.

Internet Addiction and your Relationship

Spending too much time online can definitely have a negative effect on your relationship. Your spouse or partner will come to resent the time you are spending online, since you are not “in” your relationship giving it the time and attention that it needs to grow. He or she may have concerns that you are involved with cybercheating. If you are turning away from your partner, you are threatening your relationship, whether someone else is involved or not.

The Importance Of Drug Recovery Nutrition And Healthful Dining

For people seeking help for drug and alcohol addiction, regaining their health is the ultimate goal. This includes eating well, since recovery nutrition http://theduneseasthampton.com/facility/dunes-cuisine must focus on foods that are attractive as well as nutritious.

The Dunes East Hampton knows that serving its clients a healthy, non-restrictive diet will not only give them the right type and amount of calories for their needs, but seeing selections like lobster, scallops, green leafy vegetables and farm fresh eggs will also give clients a much-needed boost to their self-esteem. This is a source of pleasure that is not derived from chemicals, and that is not lost on clients, either. The recipe listed below is an example of a delicious, nutritious way to enjoy food in recovery.

Lemon Salmon & Tomato Foil Pouch Bake

The Dunes East Hampton Pinterest: Lemon Salmon & Tomato Foil Pouch Bake

You’ll Need:

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil (more to taste)
5-6 grape tomatoes, halved
About 6 basil leaves
One 5-ounce filet of salmon (skinless or not)
1/4 lemon
1/2 spring onion or 1 scallion (optional), finely sliced
1 teaspoon chopped chives
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 475 degrees F. Cut a piece of foil that is large enough for you to place the ingredients on, lift up the edges of the foil, and seal the packet, leaving an inch or two of air space above the fish.
  2. Working in the center of the piece of foil, make a bed with the basil leaves, keeping one leaf aside. Sprinkle the leaves with a little salt and pepper. Place the salmon on the leaves and season it with salt and pepper as well.
  3. Put tomatoes on one side of the salmon and grate lemon zest over everything. Scatter spring onion or scallion over the fish and tomatoes. Squirt lemon juice over salmon, then cut two thin slices from the lemon and put them on top of the fish. Top with one or two basil leaves. Sprinkle chopped chives over top and moisten salmon with olive oil.

Seal the foil packet, making sure that it’s airtight and that there is an air space between the fish and the top of its cocoon. Place it on the baking sheet and slide it into the oven. Bake for 10 minutes if you like your fish pink and slightly jiggly in the center; bake two minutes longer if you like it better done.

How Do You Overcome Drug And Food Addiction?

Treating a substance abuse addiction with a food addiction eating disorder is unlike treating other forms of addictions, since total abstinence (from food) is not an option. Discover how to overcome drug addiction while changing your relationship with food!

How Do You Overcome A Substance Abuse Addiction And A Food Addiction?

How Do You Overcome Food Addiction - TheDunesOutpatientProgram Someone solely with a drug or alcohol addiction can be approached from the point of view that they can get free from the influence of the chemicals and then get help to deal with the root of the addiction.

It’s not that simple when the issue is also related to food, since everyone needs to eat, and no one can commit to a life of abstinence from this activity.

We help our clients learn to overcome their substance abuse addiction while also treating the secondary issue of an eating disorder to improve the quality of their lives and their health for the long-term.

First Step In Addiction Treatment: Assessment

No two clients that we see at The Dunes OP are alike, and this includes people seeking help for food addiction. The first step in determining how we can best help a client is to conduct an assessment. All of our outpatient treatment programs are customized to ensure that we meet each client’s specific needs.

Customized Treatment Plans

Once the assessment is complete, we can recommend a customized treatment plan to get at the underlying issues of both the drug addiction and the eating disorder (whether the eating disorder is food addiction, bulimia or anorexia).

We understand that a client who is in treatment for multiple addictions or disorders needs individualized care. We treat every one of our clients respectfully as a person and create customized treatment plans with multiple types of therapy, based on the client’s individual needs.

Treatment For Clients With A Secondary Eating Disorder

When our clients are receiving secondary help for food addiction and bulimia, they will need time to develop trust with their therapists and may not feel comfortable admitting how much they ate, when they last purged, or that they are still purging even after seeking treatment. They may be more likely to be able to open up to fellow peers in a group therapy session, which is less intimidating. At The Dunes, our clients receive individual and group counseling sessions as part of their treatment.

For clients who are looking for treatment for anorexia, they may tell their treatment team that they are eating more than they really are, especially if they are being treated on an outpatient basis. During a group therapy session where they are interacting with other clients who have or are experiencing similar challenges, a new client may be more likely to open up and share her experiences. If she feels accepted by the group, she will find it easier to talk to her treatment team in the same open manner.

Nutritional Counseling And Professional Chef

We always include nutritional counseling as part of our treatment plan to help our clients learn how to prepare healthy meals and why nutrition is so important for long-term recovery and sobriety. We also have a professional chef who works closely with our accredited Nutritionist and Dietician to provide local and fresh meals for our clients.

Overcoming any addiction takes time and commitment, but there is a brighter future waiting for those who are willing to take the first step and admit they need help.

What Are Behavioral Addictions And How Are They Similar To Substance Addictions?

Not all addictions involve drugs or alcohol and in the case of behavioral addictions, the affected person becomes dependent on a behavior to achieve a “high” and to “escape” from his or her life.

Examples Of Behavioral Addictions

What Are Behavioral Addictions - Outpatient Treatment - Dunes OPA person can become addicted to activities such as:

  • Food
  • Sex
  • Gambling
  • The Internet
  • Shopping
  • Video Games

How Behavioral Addictions Are Similar To Substance Addictions

No matter the type of addiction, all addictions have a compulsive component. A pattern develops where participating in the activity takes on an ever-increasing importance in the addict’s life, to the extent that he or she thinks about it most of the time and has cravings to participate in the activity.

  • The behavior changes the person’s mood by giving what is to them a positive consequence. It can be described as a “high.” The person may start using the behavior as a coping strategy to deal with stress, boredom, anxiety, or other difficult emotions.
  • Over time, it takes more of the activity to achieve the same level of satisfaction, since the client develops a tolerance.
  • If the person can’t engage in the activity, he or she experiences negative feelings, such as irritability or moodiness. Some people even react physically and get “the shakes.”
  • Behavioral addictions cause conflict between the addict and his or her family members, friends, and co-workers. The addict may promise not to engage in the behavior again and appear to be sincere in the moment but someone who is truly addicted cannot stop and will continue the same behaviors without professional help. Engaging in the addiction may cost an inordinate amount of money, and it will take time away from the addict’s family and work, which is a further source of conflict.
  • Even if a behavioral addict does have a self-imposed period of abstinence, he or she will revert back to earlier behavioral patterns without addiction treatment.

Outpatient Treatment For Behavioral Addictions

Behavioral addictions can be successfully treated. At The Dunes OP, we get to the source of the problem and treat clients for behavioral as well as substance addictions on an outpatient basis. This allows our clients to continue to receive treatment without interrupting their home, work or family life.

Who Does Outpatient Rehab Work Best For?

Though inpatient rehabs have a solid place in addiction treatment, many individuals can benefit greatly from outpatient rehab care. With less intensive treatment and accommodation of full-time schedules, outpatient programs offer intervention, therapy and the education necessary for long-term abstinence following drug addiction. Deciding which option to pursue requires assessment of the patient’s physical and psychological health, personal responsibilities and specialized treatment needs.

Who Does Outpatient Rehab Work Best For - The Dunes OPWhen Is Outpatient Drug Rehab Appropriate?

There are many cases in which outpatient rehab can prove the best option for those seeking recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. It is essential that our counselors perform a complete and professional assessment before making a recommendation. However, there are a number of signs to indicate whether outpatient treatment is a proper fit.

Lower Levels Of Physical Drug Addiction

Our outpatient program is often recommended to those who can achieve abstinence with a short visit to a detoxification center prior to enrollment, or who have already achieved physical sobriety. In many cases, lower levels of, or less severe physical addiction are correlated with shorter-term drug use.

Supportive Home Environment

Because our outpatient program does not offer 24/7 supervision, success within the program depends heavily on the client’s home environment. Clients with a supportive and sober family, healthy living situation, and positive relationships tend to fare much better in outpatient programs. The family’s commitment to their loved one’s sobriety can make a huge difference throughout treatment, as families learn to understand the dynamics of addiction, repair trust and relationships, and address family roles through addiction education and family counseling sessions.

Work / Family Responsibilities

While success in treatment far outweighs logistical needs in the wake of substance abuse, some of our clients have circumstances (such as child care needs, work responsibilities, or shared custody arrangements) that make outpatient rehab the most logical choice for recovery.

The Need And Motivation To Achieve Sobriety

Though recovery does not hinge on motivation levels alone, outpatient care tends to require a higher level of determination. This often means participation in 12-step meetings, healthy lifestyle building, trigger avoidance, and seeking ongoing treatment in order to ensure a healthy and lasting sobriety. We recommend our inpatient rehab for clients who require higher levels of addiction treatment in a residential setting.

No matter the type of addiction treatment you need, we have the caring and qualified staff to meet all of your recovery needs. Call us now!

Holistic Meditation For Addiction Recovery

Meditation has served as a metaphysical link in many eastern spiritual cultures for centuries; gaining recent validation from western medical practitioners in regard to substance abuse and addiction treatment. Though not a cure-all for dependence, when included within a recovery setting, meditation offers a renewed spiritual connection, increased self-awareness, heightened creativity, and diminished levels of negative response to daily stresses.

The Benefits Of Meditation For Addiction Recovery

Holistic Meditation For Addiction Recovery - TheDunesEastHamptonOPMeditation is a personal endeavor, and not an activity that necessarily requires hands-on instruction. However, in the interest of accelerated learning, our dedicated and caring treatment staff offers guidance to our clients through the meditation process.

Meditation allows for a greater connection with internal spirituality, a greater awareness of self, and a greater internal peace in life overall. This increased self-clarity aids in understanding the reasons behind addictions and provides strength against them.

When our clients achieve a truly clear and meditative state of mind, behaviors, emotions and memories can be examined objectively and introspectively. Through our addiction meditation program, clients are able to obtain a better understanding of the areas in life that trigger them to seek refuge in alcohol and drug use, while gaining a better understanding of how to address such obstacles moving forward.

Many clients have reported that through meditation, they have achieved, or reawakened, a greater sense of spiritual connection. Although our meditation program is inherently non religious, the process can often awaken spiritual beliefs and sensations.

Through an unemotional and analytic awareness of our behaviors, our life stresses become less and less demanding. The sense of tranquility gained through the practice tends to expand well beyond the designated meditation period, resulting in a greater sense of ease and calm overall. The typically upsetting and stressful events in our lives can often become less upsetting once we have achieved a greater state of awareness. Reducing the influence of these stresses inhibits the power of the environments that often lead us to relapse.

5 Tips To Fight Internet Addiction

From online gaming to quizzes and social media, it has never been easier to find oneself entrapped in an internet addiction. Though abstinence often serves as a viable option for many other addictions, a number of people rely on the medium for education or work purposes. Instead of abstaining from the internet completely, our specialists recommend these tactics to help curb the cravings and behaviors associated with the compulsion.

Tips To Overcome Internet Addiction

    1. Accept the issue – In order to combat an addiction, addicts must first come to terms with the fact that there is a problem. Once an addiction is recognized, the repair process will be much smoother.

5 Tips To Overcome Internet Addiction - The Dunes

  1. Locate your triggers – There are typically events or actions that set off an internet addict. Anxiety, stress, or boredom are very common in this area. Once you have determined your triggers, do your best to eliminate them in different ways. For instance, if you use the internet most while you are anxious, find another outlet, such as exercise or an artistic endeavor.
  1. Keep a log of how often you use the internet – Most individuals don’t realize how much scroll time they devote daily. Record use habits each and every time you pop in. Log the date, start time, and end time of each session to gain a better understanding of your habits. You may be surprised just how much time is “wasted” online!
  1. Set goals for your off-time internet use; placing time restrictions on your sessions – An hour each night should be a proper starting point. Make sure to log off as soon as the alarm sounds. Keep in mind that you can always finish what you were doing the next day. As your mind begins to acclimate to an hour, begin scaling back the time in 10- to 15-minute increments.
  1. Focus on your health! Internet addiction often robs users of their free time and hobbies once they’ve succumbed to the addiction. Create a list of activities that you enjoy. Next time you feel like checking your inbox, do one of those things instead! Play music, go for a jog, or take a drive somewhere new. This tactic will also help you spend more time with your family, which may have suffered neglect during your internet addiction.

4 Ways Proper Nutrition Can Benefit Your Addiction Recovery

4 Ways Proper Nutrition Can Benefit Addiction RecoveryIn order for the brain to process information correctly, our neurotransmitters must be fully operational. Alcohol and drugs stimulate these neurotransmitters, but will ultimately deplete them with excess use. Malnutrition is another common side effect of substance abuse, often requiring the aid of a nutrition recovery addiction treatment program to repair the damage done.

4 Ways Your Addiction Recovery Can Benefit From Proper Nutrition:

1. Minimize Cravings And Promote A Positive Attitude

Both drugs and alcohol prevent the body from sustaining and breaking down nutrients and releasing toxins. This can result in a number of health issues, including malnutrition. At our East Hampton addiction recovery facility, patients learn to change their negative actions into positive ones, restoring both spiritual and physical well-being. Many addicts struggle to control their cravings during recovery. Studies have show that a diet high in protein and carbohydrates can help minimize these cravings by promoting a positive mindset.

2. Help Repair Damage To Circulation And Heart

Alcohol and drugs can adversely impact the hair and skin. Foods that are rich in nutrients (vitamins C and A and proteins) can help restore these areas to a healthier state. Where circulation and the heart are concerned, a low-fat, protein-rich diet combined with exercise can help reduce inflammation, restore muscle loss, and lower high blood pressure. Foods that are rich in nutrients and calories can contain moderate fat work to restore vitamins and minerals while reducing the living swelling caused by substance abuse.

3. Elevate Mood And Energy

In order to elevate mood and energy levels, our clients are advised to eat small, regular meals throughout the day. The diet should include fresh fruits and vegetables, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, and whole grain foods. Clients are also encouraged to substitute red meat for beans while decreasing the consumption of caffeine and sugar-rich foods. Mineral and vitamin supplements can also prove beneficial in restoring mineral and vitamin levels.

4. Snacking To Reduce Mood Swings

Snacks are a great way to meet nutritional requirements while reducing mood swings. They can be eaten before bed or in between meals. Healthy snack ideas include low-fat yogurt, raw vegetables and fresh fruit.
